Test, Test, Test Before Applying Stain to Wood

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when staining wood is assuming the stain is going to look the way you expect.

Test. Test. Test.

Before stain ever touches the actual project, test the color and the entire finishing process on a sample whenever possible.

Why Testing Wood Stain Matters

Wood stain isn’t paint. The final color is influenced by the wood itself.

Wood species, grain, sanding, porosity, natural color variations, previous finishes and application technique can all affect how a stain looks.

Even two pieces of the same species of wood can accept stain differently.

That’s why looking at a stain color on a chart, a small store sample—or even inside the can—doesn’t tell you exactly what you’re going to get on your project.

Don’t Just Test the Stain—Test the System

This is something I can’t emphasize enough.

Test the color.
Test the application method.
Test the clear coat.
Test the complete finishing system.

A clear coat can change the appearance of a stain. It can deepen the color, change the warmth and alter how the grain appears.

If you’re trying to match new wood to existing cabinets, flooring, doors, beams, columns or other finished woodwork, those small differences can become very noticeable.

A Sample Can Prevent a Stain Misfire

A sample takes a little extra time.

A stain misfire can mean sanding everything back down, stripping the finish, replacing material or trying to correct a color that never should have been applied in the first place.

I’ve spent more than 40 years working with paint, stain and coatings, and one lesson has remained constant:

The best time to discover a problem is before you put it on the customer’s wood.

When I’m developing a custom stain match, I’m not simply looking for something that’s “close.” I’m testing colors, making adjustments and considering how the complete finishing system will affect the final appearance.

Don’t guess with stain. Test it.
