Sometimes finding the right stain color takes more than picking a color off a chart.
Recently, a Baton Rouge-area couple was trying to find the right stain color for the wood columns and beams on their home. They had already visited a local paint store looking for help, but they still couldn’t find the color they wanted.
The paint store recommended that they call me.
After meeting with the homeowners, looking at the wood and talking through the look they wanted, I went to work creating a custom stain color specifically for their project.
We got it.
The homeowners loved the color, and the staining began.
But this job also shows why choosing the right stain color is only part of getting a beautiful finished result.
A Stain Problem Caught Before It Became a Bigger Problem
While I was at the project, I noticed something important: the stain was being applied too heavily.
With stain, more is not necessarily better.
Applying too much product can dramatically change the appearance of the wood and may create problems with drying, color consistency and the final finish.
I spoke up, explained what I was seeing, and we were able to correct the application before it potentially affected the finished project.
That’s the part of stain matching people don’t always see.
It isn’t simply mixing colors until something looks close.
After more than 40 years working with paint, stain, coatings and color, I’m looking at the entire system—the species of wood, its natural color, preparation, stain formulation, application technique and how everything will look when the project is finished.
Custom Stain Matching for Your Home
If you have new wood that needs to coordinate with existing woodwork, flooring, cabinets, doors, beams or other finishes, you don’t necessarily have to settle for the closest stain color you can find on a shelf.
I can create the color for the project.
I specialize in custom stain and color matching for homeowners, painters, builders and designers throughout the Baton Rouge area.
If you’ve been told, “We can’t match that,” that’s exactly the kind of project I want to see.
